  • My apologies to all who have been patiently or not-so- patiently waiting for the next Enzyme Digest newsletter! It has been a busy time since last August, and now that 2004 is gone and 2005 is here, we are looking forward to a full year of conferences and speaking to parent support groups. I'm hoping we can get the newsletter out on a more regular basis. We have lots to talk about, so let's get to it!

This forum is here as a resource for information on enzymes and other nutritional issues. What would YOU like to see mentioned or addressed in the HNI newsletter? Let us know by email: .

Much to the delight of our ever-patient customers, we now have Zyme Prime available as a chewable tablet. The natural flavor is a "mixed berry" that tastes absolutely great! Your kids will want them as candy, and, hey, why not? I keep a bottle on my desk, and take them instead of the Skittles!

The tablets have about 1/3 of the potency of the encapsulated Zyme Prime (there is only so much enzyme we can put it in a tablet without making it a horse pill), so take that into account when adjusting dosing from capsules. No papain or bromelain, no rice bran or cellulose filler, either.

Contains NO starch, dairy, yeast, wheat, gluten, corn, soy, preservatives, artificial colors, artificial flavors or animal derivatives. HNI uses only the highest quality FDA GRAS approved plant-based enzymes available.

I would suggest using the tablets for those times when capsules are not convenient. You don't need water to take them, so they are great in the car or on trips. You can put them in your child's lunch as a "snack", and not go through the hassle of having the school nurse give them out.

Remember that Zyme Prime is great for the whole family, so keep a bottle of Zyme Prime Chewables on the dinner table to help get rid of that bloated feeling, or when the lactose-intolerant feel the urge for ice cream!

Enzyme supplements are now more popular than ever, thanks to the testimonials of many families who have benefited from using enzymes. With such popularity, there are bound to be imitators who want to profit off the ground-breaking done by others. Do not be surprised to see other enzyme products from other companies touting similar results to HNI enzymes.

The number of commercially-available enzymes is not that large, so combination of different enzymes will be limited. While any company can have an enzyme product made for them, very few have the expertise found at HNI. We direct the formulation of our enzyme products, and Dr. Houston personally does all formulation work. We insure that only the best enzymes are used, and only those enzymes necessary to produce the desired results are included in each product. Dr. Houston has the most experience and scientific knowledge when it comes to developing enzyme products.

Some companies will market a "new" enzyme product based on perceived benefits rather than hard data. For example, a researcher may present findings at a parent conference that indicates a certain gut enzyme involved in carbohydrate breakdown may be diminished in certain cases of early gut inflammation. He states that this may be of diagnostic value as an indicator of early inflammation. This is valuable data to build on. However, a supplement company may then use that researcher's findings to suggest or imply that that enzyme can be supplemented orally and that it is "necessary". This is twisting the data to imply that you need this product. Upon further examination, we find that the particular enzyme in question is not even active when taken orally!

There is exciting research involving enzymes in many areas of science. Now that dietary enzymes are getting more attention from doctors and scientists, many supplement companies have decided to jump on the bandwagon and convince you that you need a certain enzyme product (whether you do or not!). The sad thing is that they don't understand the science or what is presented by the reputable researcher.

We at HNI will only produce enzyme products that make sense scientifically. That is why we don't put every enzyme known to Man in a capsule. Only those that perform a known and beneficial action are used by HNI.

HNI has lowered the prices of the non-encapsulated, powder forms of its popular enzyme products.

Peptizyde and AFP Peptizyde are now $42 per 150 gram bottle, down from $44.

Zyme Prime is now $35 down from $37, and No-Fenol is reduced from $48 to $45.

HNI is known as the leader of quality enzyme products, and enzymes will always be our specialty. A number of our customers have inquired as to whether we would carry other, non-enzyme, supplements as a convenience for them; basically allowing one-stop shopping. After many months of searching and evaluation, we found a manufacturer with excellent quality control standards with an emphasis on providing scientific rationales for their products. These products can meet HNI's high standards for purity and effectiveness.

Many of these "new" supplements are not just for children. We recognize that parents and adults often overlook their own nutrtional health status while concentrating on that of their children. We also recognize that other companies specialize in supplements for children, and as such, their products are usually less potent to accommodate their small size and sensitivities. It is not our intent to intrude on other company's "turf", so we wish to point out that our products are designed for higher potency at more reasonable prices, a niche we feel has been sorely overlooked.

Here is a sampling of the products we've added:

HNI would like to introduce to you Maria Elena of East Java, Indonesia. Ellen, as she likes to be called, runs a children's center called Blessing Kids Center Foundation, and has been distributing HNI enzymes for over a year. Fortunately, Ellen's home town was spared the tragic effects of the tsunami last December, but she has seen some of the devastation that her people now deal with.

We are all aware of the effect of rising fuel costs on just about everything we use. Our manufacturer has informed us of a substantial price increase on encapsulated enzyme products, and HNI is forced to pass on a portion of that increase to its customers. This is the first (and hope last!) price increase in the four years we have been in business, in fact, we have absorbed other price jumps in shipping, postage, and personnel costs. However, with the rising costs imposed on small businesses from various directions, in no small part due to the weak dollar overseas (the enzymes ultimately come from Japan), we must also raise our prices effective May 1, 2005. We anticipate the increase to be about $0.50 per bottle of Peptizyde, AFP Peptizyde, HN-Zyme Prime, and Zyme Prime. We will keep the price of No-Fenol the same, though our cost for producing No-Fenol also rose. These prices are for the encapsulated enzyme products.

HNI has always been aware of the tremendous financial burden many of our customers face. We still have our 10% volume discount for 6 bottles of enzymes or more, and are willing to work with families so as not to impose a hardship. We are currently looking at ways to reduce our costs, however, we will NOT sacrifice the quality of our products.

Be assured that, if and when we can, we will reduce the prices of our products when the market pressures ease for us. Thanks for your understanding.

CereCalase(tm) is not a "real" name for an enzyme, it is the trademarked name of National Enzyme Company's proprietary mixture of hemicellulase, phytase, and beta-glucanase.

Hemicellulase is an enzyme that helps break down the complex carbohydrate structure of cellulose, producing simple sugars in the process. Hemicellulase is actually a complex family of enzymes that break down the interior bonds of galactomannan carbohydrates.

Beta-glucanase breaks down glucans, compounds found in grains that are large polysaccharides, and contribute to the "thickness" of cooked grain meals.>p>Phytase is an enzyme that prevents phytic acid, a compound found in soy and other grains, from binding up minerals such as calcium, zinc and iron.

The specific combination of these enzymes results in a blend of enzymes that break up NSPs, or non-soluble polysaccharides. NSPs are mainly in the form of beta glucans, hemicellulose and arabinoxylans. The highly viscous polysaccharides bind to digestive enzymes and impair diffusion to their substrates. The anti-nutritive effect of NSP in cereals results in a depression in the digestibility of all nutrients, Therefore, a supplement blend of phytase, hemicellulase and beta glucanase will have a significant effect on increased digestion.

CereCalase is found in HN-Zyme Prime, Zyme Prime and in No-Fenol. Suggested dosing is 1/2 to 1 capsule with meals that are high in plant fiber or grains.
